Suncoast Member Advocate Helps Teen Take First Steps Toward Financial Confidence – And Big Leap Into Public Speaking

In April, Wilbert Corvil, a member advocate at Suncoast’s Naples branch, greeted a longtime member who came in to open an account for his 16-year-old daughter – her first savings account.
As they talked through the details, Wilbert learned the young girl was preparing for a major public speaking competition, The Laws of Life, going up against 1,500 students.
She shared how nervous she felt about speaking in front of a large crowd.
Sensing her doubt and trepidation, Wilbert offered encouragement about preparation, confidence and believing in her voice. He reminded her that courage isn’t about being fearless – it’s about showing up and doing your best.
On the day of the competition, she spoke with confidence, won first place and earned a $600 prize.
Her father returned to the branch to convey the wonderful news, and credited Wilbert’s encouragement as a turning point in his daughter’s quest to succeed at the competition. Everyone gathered in Wilbert’s office to surprise the young girl with congratulations and cookies. She also deposited her $600 winnings into her Suncoast account.
What began as a routine account opening became a powerful moment of impact, showing how the Suncoast Credit Union mission, people helping people, can inspire confidence and create change.
“What Wilbert did reflects the heart of our mission,” said Denisse Nenninger, senior manager of services centers at Suncoast Credit Union. “He didn’t just help a member open an account; he helped a young person believe in herself, and that’s the kind of impact we strive to make every day.”
