Theft Alert: What Is “Bank Jugging” and How to Stay Safe
July 03, 2025

Imagine this: you’ve just withdrawn cash from your financial institution and are heading to your next errand—music on, mind elsewhere. What you don’t notice is that someone has been watching. They followed you from the branch, waiting for the right moment to strike.
This frightening scenario is known as bank jugging—a type of robbery where suspects target individuals who leave a credit union, bank, ATM, ITM, or check-cashing location with cash in hand. Once the victim leaves, the suspect follows them and seizes an opportunity to steal the money, often by breaking into their vehicle or committing a robbery on foot.
How to Protect Yourself from Bank Jugging
Law enforcement agencies warn that these incidents often occur when individuals visibly carry cash or appear distracted.
Here are steps you can take to reduce your risk:

- Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to anyone loitering nearby or acting suspiciously without a clear purpose.
- Avoid distractions. Refrain from using your phone, wearing earbuds/headphones, or doing anything that pulls your attention away while handling or transporting cash.
- Secure your cash discreetly. Do this before leaving the counter or ATM/ITM area.
- Lock your car doors immediately after entering your vehicle.
- Never leave cash unattended in your car, not even for a moment.
- Stay alert as you exit the parking lot. Check to see if any vehicles appear to be following you.

If you notice anything unusual or suspicious while visiting a branch, please notify a team member immediately.
If you believe you’re being followed after leaving a financial institution, call 911 or drive directly to the nearest police or fire/EMS station for assistance.
