Tomato Delta Blues gathers 16 of the label's best-known performers, including Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Slim, John Lee Hooker, and Brownie McGhee. While a fair amount of the collection isn't technically Delta blues, the songs that are, such as Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's "That's All Right," Mississippi John Hurt's "Talking Casey," and Johnny Shines' "Trouble's All I See" are some of the genre's finest examples. Though the compilation strays a bit beyond the confines of its title, it still manages to collect strong contributions from Lightnin' Hopkins, Sonny Terry, Little Walter, Leadbelly, and Otis Rush. While it would've been nice to see artists like Robert Johnson, Son House, Charley Patton, or Tommy Johnson inculded here, Tomato Delta Blues does a fair job of offering a sample of Delta blues, as well as other blues styles. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
