Over the years, hardcore has become so watered down that nowadays, some so-called hardcore bands have more in common with pop music than with what the style originally sounded like. Not
Deathcycle. This New York City quartet brings you directly back to the days of when
Agnostic Front and
the Cro-Mags ruled the scene on their 2008 release,
Prelude to Tyranny. In other words, it's a pure, straight-ahead hardcore album, with a slight nod to punk-metal bands such as
Motörhead and early
Suicidal Tendencies (as evidenced in their guitar riffs). And like those aforementioned bands,
Deathcycle can bash out pretty impressive hooks amongst all the fury, especially on such standout tracks as
"Enemy of the State" and
"We Will Rise," among others. Amidst all the pretend hardcore bands of the early 21st century, an album like
Prelude to Tyranny is a most welcome arrival, proving that there are still bands out there that are devoted to keeping the original hardcore flame alive.
